Dental Implants in Hungary vs Türkiye: Cost, Travel and Follow-Up Compared

Neither country publishes implant prices. Here's the sourced evidence, the travel rules for Americans, how to check your dentist, and the add-ons to price before you fly.

Dental care made up 55% of the treatments Americans had traveled abroad for in a CDC-led survey of 93,492 adults across 11 states and territories, published in Infection Control & Hospital Epidemiology in 2021 (Stoney et al., 2021). Mexico took the biggest share of those trips. But if you're looking at Europe for implants, two countries keep coming up, Hungary and Türkiye (Turkey), and they're sold on very different promises. Budapest leans on being inside the European Union. Istanbul leans on size, with 1.4 million health tourists in 2023 by Türkiye's Trade Ministry count.

This comparison sets the two side by side on the things that actually change your bill and your experience: what the price evidence really shows, how the trips work from the US, who's doing the work, and what happens once you're home. One thing to know up front is that JetWell's network includes hospitals in Türkiye that place implants and doesn't include a clinic in Hungary today. We've kept every figure here to named sources so you can check them yourself.

Which costs less for dental implants, Hungary or Türkiye?

Nobody can tell you that from published data. Neither government publishes implant prices, and the only independent Hungarian study found one provider averaged 31% below EU prices. Türkiye has no comparable study. What decides your cost is the written quote for your mouth, and whether it prices the implant and the crown on separate lines.

Here's the evidence that does exist. A 2022 abstract in Value in Health from University of Pécs researchers looked at 1,350 patients at a single Hungarian provider and found a 31% price gap against EU averages, widening to 49% for bone replacement and 51% for minor oral surgery (ISPOR, 2022). A survey of 2,550 patients by the Hungarian dental travel firm FirstMed found they paid an average of €12,897 for their treatment in 2018 and came out about €7,240 ahead after travel, though that's a company that sells these trips.

For Türkiye there's no study like that. The Trade Ministry reported $2.3 billion in health tourism revenue from 1.4 million health tourists in 2023, up from $1.9 billion and 1.26 million in 2022 (AGBI, 2024). Divide one by the other and you get roughly $1,640 per visitor, but that's our arithmetic across every kind of treatment, from eye surgery to hair, so it says nothing about what your implants will cost.

At home, CareCredit's cost guide puts the US national average for a single implant at $2,143, with a range of $1,646 to $4,175, for the implant and its placement alone. The crown is priced separately (CareCredit, 2025).

One more thing before you compare any two numbers. An arch is one jaw, upper or lower, and full mouth means both. Many full-arch prices you'll see from either country are per arch, so a full-mouth plan can run about twice the headline. Our dental implant cost by country guide and the city-level pages for Budapest and Istanbul go further into what each quote tends to contain.

How do the trips compare from the US?

Both countries let Americans stay up to 90 days in any 180 without a visa, so entry isn't the deciding factor. Flights are. Budapest had one seasonal nonstop from Philadelphia in 2026, while Istanbul has nonstops from many big US hubs. And either way, most implant plans need two trips months apart.

The two-trip pattern comes from the healing itself. In the conventional approach, implants are left without chewing load for three to eight months so the bone can bond to them, according to a Cochrane review of loading times last updated in 2013. That's the same in Budapest or Istanbul, so price both trips before you compare quotes.

    What is osseointegration?

Osseointegration is the process in which living jawbone grows onto the surface of a titanium or zirconia implant and anchors it the way a root anchors a natural tooth. Until it's finished, the implant can't carry a permanent crown, which is why the final teeth usually go on during a second visit.

The Budapest flight is worth a closer look if you're planning around it. A winter visit for your final teeth means connecting through another European city, which adds hours each way. Our guides to Budapest and Istanbul for American patients cover getting there and getting around in more detail.

Who actually does the work, and how can I check?

Ask for the name of the dentist who'll place your implants and the one who'll fit your crowns, then check them. In Hungary, every practising dentist must be on a public national register you can search. In Türkiye, the government certifies the facility that treats international patients, so you'll need to ask the facility for the dentist's details.

Hungary's register is run by OKFŐ, the National Directorate General for Hospitals. A dentist needs both a basic and an operational registration to work without supervision, and each registered professional gets a number you can check against the public database OKFŐ describes here. Chamber membership has been optional for Hungarian dentists since March 2023, so not finding someone in a chamber listing doesn't mean much.

Türkiye's Ministry of Health requires every facility treating international patients, dental clinics included, to hold an International Health Tourism Authorization Certificate, and the state agency USHAŞ lists certified providers on HealthTürkiye. That certificate tells you the facility meets the Ministry's quality standards. It doesn't tell you which dentist will be in the room, so ask.

In JetWell's model you don't pick a clinic off a list. You tell Jett what you'd like done, JetWell matches you with a clinic in its network, and that clinic is named on your Care Plan along with the treatment it's agreed to.

Are there any add-ons once I'm there?

There can be, in either country. With implants they usually show up after the 3D scan on your first day, once the dentist can see how much bone you've got. The University of Pécs study priced bone replacement separately from the implants themselves, and that's typical of how these quotes are built.

Line item Why it gets added Which trip What to ask before you fly
3D CT scan and X-rays Taken on arrival, sometimes billed apart Trip 1 Is the scan included, and will I get the files?
Extractions Teeth the scan shows can't be saved Trip 1 What's the price per tooth?
Bone graft or sinus lift Not enough bone to hold an implant Trip 1 What's the price per site if I need one?
Temporary teeth Something to wear during the healing months Trip 1 Are temporaries included, and how many sets?
Abutment The connector between implant and crown, often listed apart Trip 2 Is the abutment in the implant price?
Crown material Zirconia and porcelain-fused-to-metal are priced differently Trip 2 Which material is quoted, and what's the upgrade price?

Line items follow the implant stages in the Cochrane review and the separate bone-replacement pricing in the University of Pécs study (ISPOR, 2022).

A quote that says "implant" and one that says "implant plus zirconia crown" can be thousands apart once you're in the chair. With JetWell, everything on your Care Plan is price-locked and anything not on it is extra. The deposit isn't refundable, so read the Care Plan line by line before you pay it.

What happens if something goes wrong after I'm home?

You'll be seen by a dentist at home, most likely, so plan for it before you go. A 2022 British Dental Association survey of about 1,000 UK dentists found 94% had examined patients who'd had dental work abroad, and 86% of those had treated cases that developed problems afterward. Crowns and implants led the list.

The BDA's findings come from UK dentists, whose patients travel to both Hungary and Türkiye, and they don't split the results by country. American data points the same way. In the CDC-led survey, 67% of people who'd traveled for care went on to get care after they came back to the US.

That's worth keeping in proportion. A 2019 systematic review in the Journal of Dentistry pooled 18 studies and estimated 10-year implant survival at 96.4%, or 93.2% once the authors adjusted for patients lost to follow-up (Howe et al., 2019). Most implants last. What the BDA numbers tell you is that when something does need fixing, it's usually a dentist near home who fixes it, and they'll need your records to do it well.

So before you leave either country, collect your scans and X-rays as files, the implant card with the brand and model, the name of the dentist who placed the implants, and treatment notes in English. The CDC's Yellow Book also suggests finding out which follow-up costs are included and where follow-up happens. Line up a US dentist willing to see you between trips, and ask what a visit costs. Our guides to getting your records from a clinic abroad and finding a US doctor for follow-up walk through both.

Which is the better fit for you?

The honest answer depends on things only you know. These are the factors that tend to tip it one way or the other:

    1. When you can travel. If both trips fall between late May and early October and you're near Philadelphia, Budapest's nonstop helps. If you'll travel in winter or live on the West Coast, Istanbul's nonstops from more US cities, Los Angeles among them, can mean fewer connections.
    2. How you want to check the dentist. Hungary lets you look up the individual dentist on a national register. Türkiye certifies the facility, so you'll be asking for names and credentials directly.
    3. How much bone work you're likely to need. If a US dentist has already mentioned grafts or a sinus lift, get those priced in writing from either country before anything else.
    4. Who'll see you at home. Line up that dentist first, wherever you go.
