Dental Implants in Budapest: What They Cost and What's in the Quote

The US benchmark, what the only independent Hungarian price study found, the line items that change a quote, and why you should budget for two trips.

Patients who traveled to Hungary for dental work paid an average of €12,897 for their treatment in 2018 and came out about €7,240 ahead once flights and hotels were counted, according to a survey of 2,550 patients run by the Hungarian dental travel firm FirstMed and reported by Dental Tribune. That's a big number, and it comes from a company that sells these trips, so we'll treat it as a starting point. If you're holding a US quote for one implant or a whole arch and wondering whether Budapest really comes in lower, the honest answer depends on what's inside the Budapest quote and whether you've priced the second trip.

This guide walks through what a Budapest implant quote usually contains, which costs tend to appear only once you're in the chair, and how to compare it fairly with what you'd pay at home. JetWell's network doesn't include a clinic in Hungary today, so nothing here is a sales pitch for one. For the city itself, our guide to Budapest for American patients covers getting there and checking a dentist's registration.

How much do dental implants cost in Budapest?

No government agency or independent body publishes Budapest implant prices, so every figure you'll see online comes from a clinic or a broker. The closest independent evidence is a 2022 study abstract in Value in Health, which found one Hungarian provider's prices averaged 31% below European Union averages, and about half below them for bone grafting and minor oral surgery.

That abstract, from University of Pécs researchers, covered a sample of 1,350 patients at a single provider, so it describes one clinic (ISPOR, 2022). One detail in it surprised us. Only 5% of the foreign patients came for implants, while most had ceramic dentures made. Hungarian patients went the other way, and 55% of them came for implants.

For a sense of what "EU average" means in euros, a 2026 micro-costing study in Frontiers in Public Health tracked 76 patients at a private clinic in Thessaloniki, Greece, and found the average cost per implant-restored tooth was €1,329.57 in 2021 and 2022 (Chatzidou et al., 2026). It's one clinic in Greece. Still, it's a peer-reviewed figure from a European private practice, which is more than most price lists can say.

At home, CareCredit's 2024 cost study put the US national average for a single implant at $2,143, with a range of $1,646 to $4,157, and that's for the implant alone. The crown on top ran $488 to $3,254 depending on the material (CareCredit, 2024). Add the two and you can see why so many US quotes for one finished tooth land in the thousands.

So treat any single Budapest number you've seen as a clinic's asking price. The quote that matters is the written one for your mouth, and it's worth checking whether each price is per tooth, per arch or for the full mouth. An arch is one jaw; full mouth is both. Our dental implant cost by country guide lays out the ranges for other destinations if you're comparing.

Those savings were measured against prices in Germany, Austria, the UK and other European countries, where most of Budapest's dental patients come from. Nobody has published the same survey for Americans, and your flights cost more than theirs.

Why does a Budapest implant quote usually cover two trips?

Most implant plans need two visits because the jawbone has to grow onto the implant before the final crown goes on. In the conventional approach, implants are left without chewing load for three to eight months, according to a Cochrane review of loading times, updated in 2013. So the money splits across two trips months apart.

    What is osseointegration?

Osseointegration is the process in which living jawbone bonds directly to the surface of a titanium or zirconia implant, anchoring it the way a root anchors a natural tooth. Until it's done, the implant can't carry a permanent crown, which is why most Budapest plans have a healing gap between visits.

The second trip is the line people forget to budget. It means another round-trip flight and another stretch of hotel nights, plus the time off work. And the summer nonstop that made the trip shorter doesn't run all year. American Airlines flew Philadelphia to Budapest daily from May 21 to October 5, 2026, on a 787-8, according to the US International Trade Administration, so a winter visit means connecting through another European city.

Some plans fit temporary teeth within days of surgery, especially full-arch work. Our All-on-4 recovery timeline explains what the months between temporary and final teeth look like, and our guide to dental implants abroad covers the treatment in more depth.

Are there any add-ons once I'm there?

There can be, and with implants they usually turn up after the 3D scan on day one, when the dentist can finally see your bone. Ask, in writing and before you book flights, whether each of these is inside the price you've been given.

Line item Why it gets added Which trip What to ask
3D CT scan and X-rays Taken on arrival, sometimes billed separately Trip 1 Is the scan included, and will I get the files?
Extractions Teeth the scan shows can't be saved Trip 1 Is each extraction priced per tooth?
Bone graft or sinus lift Too little bone to hold the implant Trip 1 What's the price if I need one, per site?
Abutment The connector between implant and crown, often listed apart from the implant Trip 2 Is the abutment in the implant price?
Temporary teeth Something to wear during the healing months Trip 1 Are temporaries included, and how many?
Final crown material Zirconia and porcelain-fused-to-metal are priced differently Trip 2 Which material is quoted, and what's the upgrade price?
Second-trip travel Flights and hotel nights for the final teeth Trip 2 Does any package include transfers or hotel for both visits?

Line items reflect the implant stages described in the Cochrane review and the University of Pécs study, which priced bone replacement separately (ISPOR, 2022).

Ask for every item priced on its own line, and ask what the clinic charges if a graft turns out to be needed on the day. The difference between a quote that says "implant" and one that says "implant, abutment and zirconia crown" can be most of the bill. In JetWell's network, everything on your Care Plan is price-locked and anything not on it is extra, and the deposit isn't refundable, so the Care Plan is the document to read before you pay anything.

How long do dental implants last, and why does that matter for cost?

Most implants are still in place ten years on. A 2019 systematic review in the Journal of Dentistry pooled 18 studies and estimated 10-year implant survival at 96.4%, or 93.2% once the authors adjusted for patients lost to follow-up (Howe et al., 2019). For patients 65 and over, the adjusted estimate was 91.5%.

That matters for the money because an implant is a long-term purchase, and the crown on top may need replacing at some point. You'll want the implant card from Budapest with the brand and model on it, since a US dentist needs those details to source matching parts years from now. And you're far from alone in needing that. A 2018 study in the Journal of Dental Research found implant use among US adults missing teeth rose from 0.7% in 1999 to 2000 to 5.7% in 2015 to 2016, and projected it could reach as high as 23% by 2026 (Elani et al., 2018). More US dentists see implants every year, including ones placed abroad.

What happens if something feels wrong after I'm home?

Call the Budapest clinic and a US dentist the same day, and don't wait for your second trip. If an implant starts to hurt or a temporary comes loose, get seen locally, and know that a US dentist can only help quickly if they have your records.

So before you fly home from the first trip, collect your scans and X-rays as files, the implant card, the full name of the dentist who placed the implants, and treatment notes in English. Line up a US dentist willing to see you between trips, and ask what they charge for a visit, because that's a real cost of going abroad too. Our guides to getting your records from a clinic abroad and finding a US doctor for follow-up walk through both steps.

On entry, the US State Department says Americans can stay in Hungary up to 90 days without a visa, with a passport valid at least three months past the day you leave. Two dental trips months apart won't come close to that limit.

JetWell doesn't have a clinic in Hungary today. In JetWell's model you don't pick a clinic off a list: you tell Jett what you'd like done, and JetWell matches you with a clinic in its network, named on your Care Plan. If you're weighing Budapest against other places, ask Jett about dental implants and say what you're hoping to have done.
