Liposuction Cost by Country: What You'd Pay at Home and Abroad
The US fee, the savings ranges for Mexico, Türkiye, Thailand and South Korea, and the per-area add-ons that change a quote, with a source for every number.
Liposuction was done more than 2 million times around the world in 2024. The ISAPS 2024 Global Survey counted 2,087,189 procedures, down 12.6% on the year before, which made it the second most common cosmetic operation after eyelid surgery and still the most common one for women. The US did 342,751 of them. And if you've priced it at home, you already know the surgeon's fee alone can run past $7,000.
So it makes sense to look at what the same operation costs elsewhere. This guide sets out the US numbers, what the published savings estimates say for each country, why a fair comparison is harder than the price lists suggest, and which line items tend to get added once you're there.
How much does liposuction cost in the US?
In the US, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons' 2024 figures put the surgeon's fee for liposuction at about $4,300 to $7,500. That's the fee only. Anesthesia and the operating room are billed on top, along with other costs such as your garments, so the total you'd actually pay is higher, and it rises with every extra area you have treated.
ASPS moved from single averages to ranges in its 2024 report, because fees vary so much by region and by how much is being treated. Its 2023 report, the last one with a single number, gives a useful midpoint.
| Year | ASPS figure for liposuction | What it covers |
|---|---|---|
| 2022 | $4,449 average surgeon fee | Surgeon's fee only |
| 2023 | $4,711 average surgeon fee | Surgeon's fee only |
| 2024 | $4,300–$7,500 surgeon fee range | Surgeon's fee only |
| 2024 | $3,000–$5,500 for chin (submental) liposuction | Surgeon's fee only |

A treatment area is one region of the body the surgeon works on in a single session, such as the abdomen, the flanks (your "love handles"), the inner thighs or the upper arms. Liposuction is almost always priced per area, so a quote for "liposuction" means very little until you know how many areas it covers. "Lipo 360" is the common name for treating the whole midsection at once, including the back, and it's usually priced as several areas bundled together.
ASPS says the surgeon's fee depends on their experience, the technique, the size of the area and where the practice is. Those same things move prices abroad too, which is why a single country number can mislead you.
How much can you save on liposuction abroad?
Published estimates put savings on surgery abroad at roughly 30% to 75% of the US price, depending on the country. Patients Beyond Borders lists Mexico at 40% to 65%, Türkiye at 50% to 65%, Thailand at 50% to 75% and South Korea at 30% to 45%. Those are general ranges across procedures, so check them against a written quote for the exact areas you want.
We looked for an independent, country-by-country price list for liposuction itself and didn't find one. No government health agency or professional society publishes one. The figures you'll see online come from clinics and booking sites. They swing widely between pages and months, and they rarely say how many areas they include. So this guide gives you the savings ranges with their source, and the questions that turn any quote into a fair comparison, rather than a table of prices we can't stand behind.
Liposuction by country, side by side
Here's what the independent data does tell you about each country. Volume matters for a reason: a country that does a lot of cosmetic work has a lot of surgeons who do this operation every week. It doesn't tell you anything about any single clinic, though.
| Country | Published savings vs US | Cosmetic procedures in 2024 | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| United States | Baseline | 6,165,173 (ISAPS) | Surgeon's fee $4,300–$7,500 per ASPS, before anesthesia and facility |
| Mexico | 40–65% | 1,294,946 (ISAPS) | Short flights from much of the US, which makes a check-up trip back easier |
| Türkiye | 50–65% | 1,110,306 (ISAPS) | The Ministry of Health lists facilities authorized to treat international patients |
| Thailand | 50–75% | No figure found | Long-haul from the US, so the wait before flying home matters more |
| South Korea | 30–45% | No figure found | 1.17 million foreign patients in 2024, 11.4% of them for plastic surgery (KHIDI) |
| Colombia | No published range found | No figure found | Quotes vary too much to summarize, so compare them line by line |

Brazil did more cosmetic procedures than anywhere except the US in 2024, about 3.1 million by ISAPS's count, and Patients Beyond Borders puts savings there at a much smaller 20% to 30%. South Korea's draw is mostly skin and face work: KHIDI's 2024 report found dermatology made up 56.6% of its foreign patients, well ahead of plastic surgery.

Are there any add-ons once I'm there?
There often are, and with liposuction they're easy to predict. Most of them come from the number of areas growing at your in-person exam, or from things the price page never mentioned. Before you pay a deposit, ask whether your written quote covers each of these:
- The exact list of treatment areas, by name. "Abdomen" and "abdomen plus flanks" are different prices.
- What happens to the price if the surgeon suggests another area once they examine you
- Fat transfer, if any of the removed fat is going somewhere else. A Brazilian butt lift is liposuction plus fat transfer, and it's priced and planned as a separate operation.
- The anesthesia type and the anesthesiologist's fee
- Compression garments, and whether a second one is included so you can wash the first
- Drains, if the surgeon uses them, and the visit to take them out
- Lymphatic drainage massage sessions, which many clinics recommend and charge for separately
- Nights in the hospital or clinic, and who pays if you need to stay longer
Extra areas are the one to watch, because liposuction is priced per area. A quote built from photos can grow when the surgeon sees you in person, so get it in writing that the price can't change without your agreement before anything starts.
With JetWell, everything on your Care Plan is price-locked, and anything not on it is extra. Your deposit isn't refundable, so read the Care Plan line by line before you pay it. Some fees, such as an extra night if you need one, may still be paid at the clinic, and not every package includes a hotel or transfers, so check what yours says. Our list of questions to ask before booking surgery abroad is worth printing.
Who actually does my liposuction?
It should be a plastic surgeon, and you should know their full name before you pay anything. Ask for the surgeon's and the anesthesiologist's names in writing, and check that the person you meet at the exam is the person named on your consent form.
Where you check depends on the country. In Türkiye, the Ministry of Health's HealthTürkiye list of certified providers shows which facilities are authorized to treat international patients. Our cosmetic surgery abroad guide covers credential checks for other countries, and if you're weighing liposuction against a tummy tuck, our tummy tuck vs liposuction comparison explains which one loose skin calls for.
In JetWell's model you don't pick a clinic from a list. You tell Doc what you'd like done, JetWell matches you with a clinic in its network, and your Care Plan names the clinic doing the work.
When can I fly home after liposuction?
For liposuction on the abdomen, plan to stay at least 10 days. The CDC Yellow Book's medical travel chapter advises against flying for 10 days after chest or abdominal surgery, because of changes in cabin pressure. Your surgeon should give you a written fit-to-fly date, and that date should set your return flight.
That wait is a real part of the cost, and it's the part people leave out when they compare prices. Ten nights in a hotel and the time off work both sit on top of the operation, and so does the flight itself. Add those to each quote before you compare countries, because a bigger saving on the surgery can shrink once a long-haul ticket and the extra days are counted. Our guide to flying after cosmetic surgery covers the trip home itself, including walking the aisle and wearing your garment on the plane.
What happens if something feels wrong after I'm home?
Chest pain or sudden shortness of breath means an emergency room straight away, not a message to the clinic. So does a calf that's suddenly swollen and painful. For redness, heat, a wound that leaks or a fever, message your surgeon and see a US doctor the same day. Line up that doctor before you go, and bring your records home in English.
Those symptoms matter because of what the US data shows. A 2024 CDC report found that 93 US citizens died after cosmetic surgery in the Dominican Republic between 2009 and 2022. Of the 24 deaths from 2019 and 2020 with medical records, liposuction had been part of the operation in every one. Where autopsy reports were available, a fat embolism, when fat gets into the bloodstream and blocks blood flow to the lungs, caused 11 of 20 deaths, and a blood clot in the lungs caused seven.
Infection is the other problem to watch for. A 2026 CDC study in Emerging Infectious Diseases looked at 21 investigations CDC was asked to help with from 2014 to 2024, covering about 145 US patients with problems after cosmetic procedures, including infections, and 17 of those investigations involved travel abroad. Infections can show up weeks after you're home, so a wound that was healing and then turns red and swollen is worth getting looked at.
Our guide to finding a US doctor for follow-up care walks through setting that up before you leave. Follow-up care at home can be expensive and your health plan may not cover it, so check your plan, and look at optional JetCover protection on eligible bookings.
