Hip Replacement Cost in India: What the Price Covers and What Gets Added
India caps what a knee implant can cost, but not a hip. Here's what a hospital package usually covers, what gets added, how to check your surgeon, and what to plan for at home.
In 2013 the average US hospital spent $23,650 on one total hip replacement, according to a Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery study of 2.8 million hip admissions. That's the hospital's own cost, up by almost half since 2002, before your surgeon's fee or anybody's markup. Indian hospitals that treat international patients advertise a whole hip for a small slice of that, which is probably why you're reading this.
There's one thing a hip quote in India doesn't share with a knee quote, though. India's government caps what a knee implant can sell for, and it doesn't cap hips. So the implant, which is often one of the biggest lines on an American bill, is also the line that moves most from one Indian quote to the next. This guide covers what a package usually covers, the add-ons to get in writing, how to check who's operating, and what to line up for when you're back home.
How much does a hip replacement cost in India?
Most advertised international-patient packages for one total hip replacement in India fall between about $4,000 and $8,000, the range the Medical Tourism Association gives in its 2026 cost guide. That usually covers the surgeon, anesthesia, the operating room, a standard implant and your days in hospital. Extended rehab, flights and a companion's hotel usually sit outside it.
Total hip replacement, also called total hip arthroplasty, is surgery that takes out the worn ball at the top of the thighbone and the damaged socket in the pelvis and replaces both with an artificial joint. A stem with a ball on top goes into the thighbone, and a metal cup with a liner goes into the socket. The American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons explains that the stem can be cemented or "press fit" into the bone, and, citing the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, says more than 450,000 total hip replacements are done in the US every year.
Why isn't the hip implant price capped in India?
India's implant price ceiling covers knees only. The National Pharmaceutical Pricing Authority (NPPA) set it in August 2017 and cut the price of a basic cobalt-chromium knee system by about 65%, according to the Government of India's press release. Business Standard reported that the NPPA extended the knee ceiling at its November 14, 2025 meeting, to November 15, 2026. Hip implants were never part of that order. An NPPA expert committee did look at landed cost and retail price data for cemented and uncemented hip implants at a February 2026 meeting, Medical Dialogues reported, but we found no hip ceiling order published since.
In practice, the hospital sets its own price for your hip implant, and two hospitals' quotes can differ by a lot on that one line. US prices swing just as widely. A 2012 study of 61 US hospitals, published in JBJS, found that the average cost of a hip implant alone ran from $2,392 at one hospital to $12,651 at another, in 2008.
Here's how the figures line up. They don't all measure the same thing, so read the middle column before you compare rows.
| What you're comparing | Figure | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| US hospital cost, one total hip replacement | $23,650 (2013 average) | The hospital's own cost, not the price billed; surgeon's fee not included | Molloy et al., JBJS, 2017 |
| US average hospital stay for a hip | 2.75 days in 2013, down from 4.06 in 2002 | Nights in hospital after surgery | Molloy et al., JBJS, 2017 |
| US hip implant cost, 61 hospitals | $2,392 to $12,651 (2008) | The implant alone, averaged per hospital | Robinson et al., JBJS, 2012 |
| India international-patient package, one hip | about $4,000 to $8,000 | Usually surgeon, anesthesia, operating room, standard implant and hospital stay | Medical Tourism Association, 2026 |
| India hip implant price ceiling | None; the 2017 ceiling covers knees | Whether the government limits the implant's price | NPPA via PIB, 2017; Medical Dialogues, 2026 |
Are there any add-ons once I'm in India?
There can be, and with a hip most of them trace back to the implant. A package price assumes a particular implant, one hip and a set number of nights, and anything outside that can be billed on top. Get each of these answered in writing before you pay anything:
| Item | Ask the hospital |
|---|---|
| Implant brand | Which brand and model of hip system is in the price? |
| Bearing surface | Is the ball ceramic or metal, and is the liner plastic (polyethylene) or ceramic? What does each upgrade add? |
| Cemented or uncemented | Which fixation is the price based on, and does the price change if the surgeon chooses the other on the day? |
| One hip or both | Is the price per hip? What's the price if both hips are done in the same stay? |
| Robotic or computer-assisted surgery | Is it included, and what does it add if the surgeon recommends it? |
| Room | Which room category is included, and what does an upgrade cost per night? |
| Pre-op tests | Are blood work, imaging and a heart check included, and what happens to my money if a result means surgery can't go ahead? |
| Physiotherapy | How many sessions are in the package, and do any continue after I leave hospital? |
| Extra nights | What does each extra hospital night cost if I'm not ready to be discharged? |
| Going home | Are a walker, blood thinners and pain medication to take home included? |
The Medical Tourism Association's 2026 guide notes that extended rehabilitation, a companion's accommodation and travel often aren't in an Indian hip package, so ask where your physio happens after discharge.
With JetWell, everything on your Care Plan is price-locked, and anything that isn't on it is extra. Hold any quote to that same rule. A JetWell deposit goes toward your package, and before you send a deposit anywhere it's worth reading exactly what it covers and what happens to it if a pre-op result stops the surgery.
Who actually does my hip replacement in India?
Your hip replacement should be done by an orthopedic surgeon registered with an Indian State Medical Council, and you can check that yourself before you book. Ask for the surgeon's full name and registration number in writing, then look them up on the National Medical Commission's Indian Medical Register, which you can search by name, registration number or council. The same site keeps a list of doctors whose registration has been suspended.
Then ask how many hip replacements this surgeon does in a typical year, and which approach they use. The approach changes how you'll have to sit, bend and sleep for weeks. The AAOS guide to activities after hip replacement says patients who've had the posterior approach should avoid bending at the waist past 90 degrees and crossing their legs at the knees, and that most people can go back to those movements after six to eight weeks.
The hospital matters too. NABH accreditation is India's national hospital accreditation, awarded by the National Accreditation Board for Hospitals and Healthcare Providers, a constituent board of the Quality Council of India that was set up in 2005 and began accrediting in 2006, according to NABH. Ask if your hospital holds it, and if it holds JCI accreditation as well. Here's what JCI accreditation actually means.
What happens if something feels wrong after I'm home?
Call your surgeon's team and a US doctor the same day, and go to an emergency room for chest pain, sudden trouble breathing, or a calf that's swollen, hot or painful. The CDC Yellow Book notes that air travel and surgery each raise the risk of blood clots on their own. A hip that suddenly hurts badly and won't take your weight needs the emergency room too.
That's why the flight home needs a plan, and with a new hip there's an extra wrinkle. A long economy flight means hours in a low seat, which is exactly the deep bend that posterior-approach precautions warn against. Ask your surgeon when you're cleared to fly, if you should take a blood thinner for the trip, and if a seat cushion or an aisle seat would help. The CDC's guidance on blood clots during travel covers calf exercises and walking the aisle when you can.
Before you leave India, get your operative report, your discharge summary and your medication list in English, along with the make, model and size of every part of the implant. Ask for the implant's barcode stickers too, and keep them with your passport. The CDC Yellow Book tells doctors to remind patients to bring their overseas records to whoever sees them at home. And book a US physical therapist before you fly out, since the walking and strength work in the weeks after you land is where a new hip really settles in. If you don't have a US doctor lined up yet, here's how to find one for follow-up.
What do I need to travel to India for hip surgery?
Most Americans travel on an e-Medical visa. The Government of India's e-Visa portal says it runs for 60 days from your first arrival, with multiple entries allowed in that time, and that you can apply as little as four days and as much as 120 days before you land. Up to two companions can get an e-Medical Attendant visa linked to yours, and with a new hip you'll want somebody to carry the bags.
You'll probably be one of the few Americans on the ward. India's Ministry of Tourism told Parliament in March 2026 that 6,44,387 foreigners arrived for medical treatment in 2024, and 4,82,336 of them came from Bangladesh, based on Bureau of Immigration figures.
